How to Play Limbo

This week we're learning to write instructions! So we wrote instructions for one our favourite games.

How to play limbo

Things you will need
  • One long stick or pole
  • Limbo music
  • People to play the game, the more the better
  • A large space to play in (a hall, large empty room or maybe a grassy area)

Step 1: Get two people to hold the stick.

Step 2: Get everyone else to make a line in front of the stick. They must be at least 3 steps back from the stick.

Step 3: Start with the sticker high in the air and after each round the two holders must lower it.

Step 4: To start the game play your limbo music.

Step 5: If a player touches the stick or falls down they are out.

Step 6: The winner is the last one standing (the person who can go lowest).

Step 7: You will need a judge to say who is in and who is out.

Kupe and the Giant Wheke Part 3

Kupe and the Giant Wheke Part 3 as retold by Sarona

Kupe and all the villagers set off to sea to find the wheke. The people were angry because they had no food. They couldn't wait to slice the wheke because the wheke killed and ate all their fish. They travelled for months searching for the wheke. Finally they found it, they also found a land. Kupe's wife called it Aotearoa, the land of the long white cloud. Kupe got the wheke and sliced it up into pieces. They were very happy. Then they went home. They lived happily ever after.

Kupe and the Giant Wheke Part 2

Part 2 of our Kupe and the Giant Wheke Story as told by Raeleen

The next morning, Kupe and the fishermen set out to find source of their problem. They lowered their lines, Kupe noticed a slimy substance covering his hook and recognised it belonged to an octopus. Kupe knew that a chief called Muturangi from another village had a pet octapus. Kupe told Muturangi what had been happening at their fishing grounds. He asked Muturangi's is it your pet octopus eating our fish and bait Muturangi said "I don't care." Kupe said "I wil kill your octopus if it does that again, I will kill it!"

Te Ika a Maui

In Room 11 we've been learning writing narratives as well as learning to write in paragraphs. We hope you enjoy our retelling of Te Ika a Maui.

Once there was a man named Maui. He was extremely lazy. His wife would be nagging him to look after the kids. So he decided to go fishing with his brothers. So he went to hide in their canoe (his brothers hated taking him fishing as he was always playing tricks on them). The brothers were talking about him, complaining about the trouble he always caused.

He popped out from his hiding place. His brothers were so angry when they saw him. They did not want him in their waka but they were too far out to sea to take him back. So they let him stay. They decided to start fishing . Maui took out his magical hook an punched his nose for bait.

Maui swung his hook into the ocean. He said a prayer to the gods asking for an enormous fish. After a while he felt something heavy tug on his line. It felt really heavy, Maui knew it wasn't a normal fish. Maui called out "Help me brothers, don't just stand there came and help me catch this magical fish!" His brothers came and helped him, they pulled with all their magic powers. Finally they reeled the fish in. They were excited to see it was really a new land they named it Te Ika a Maui.

Mice can live in house or outside in fields. Mice like living in warm places. When mice live in our houses they make their homes in our walls and under the floors. Humans don't like mice living in their houses because they can carried diseases.

Mice need food and water. They like eating vegtables, fruit, cheese and even peanut butter.

Volcanic Eruptions!

In Auckland we live near many extinct volcanoes but would you know what to do if there was an active volcano nearby? Taeshell does!

A volcano is like a chimney in the earth there is magma inside but when it comes out we call it lava. It is also a moutain. Some volcanoes are active and some are not. The top of the volcano is called the crater. If a volcano erupts we have got to run away. Or if we can't get away that fast we have to get away from the lava and try not to get burnt. If there is a volcanic eruption nearby you need to listen to the radio so it can tell you what to do. If you are leaving your house you need to wear protective clothing and you also need to take your survival kit.

Earthquake Advice

What you should do! Advice from Junior...

An earthquake is when the earth moves and makes noise. In an earthquake the earth moves and and can make a tsunami. You should drop down and cover your face and head!

Earthquake!

Do you know what to do in an earthquake? Mohammed does!

An earthquake is when the earth's plates push together. In an earthquake the earth shakes. When the earth shakes land and building can get damaged and it can cause a tsunami. In an earthquake you have to drop, cover and hold. That means you drop down on the ground, cover yourself under a table and you hold onto the table legs.

Rangitoto Island

We've been learning about volcanoes. Here is a report we wrote as a class.

Rangitoto Island

Rangitoto Island is a volcanic island near Auckland city.

Rangitoto Island is 5.5 kilometres wide and is a well-known Auckland landmark.

Rangitoto is a symmetrical shield volcano cone rising 260 metres from the sea. A shield cone volcano is a volcano made up of basalt rich lava, which is thin and runny and spreads a long way from the vent. This makes an island shape that has long gentle slopes. It is also Auckland's newest volcano, it was formed between 600 and 700 years ago. Rangitoto is Maori for Bloody Sky.

What can you see?

The volcanologist is measuring the temperture of the lava. The lava's temperture must be 5000 degrees or more! The volcanologist is taking the temperture with a pole.

Mikaiah and Wakatere

The Volcanologist is measuring how hot the lava is. He has special clothing on so he doesn't get burnt. He has a long pole that looks bent. It looks hot and it looks dangerous but the lava isn't burning the man.

Lukis and Andee

The volcanologist is measuring the temperture if the hot flaming lava with a long pole, at the end of the pole is a probe. The volcanologist is wearing protective clothing like gloves, shoes, a jacket and goggles so he doesn't get burnt. Analysing lava looks dangerous and volcanolgists study volcanoes.

Anamei and Taeshell

He is wearing protective clothing. The volcanologist is using a long pole to measure the lava. It's a dangerous job!

Active Earth

In Room 11 we are learning to write more complex sentences by using interesting words. Here are some of our sentences about a volcano we were looking at.

The volcano is exploding hot steaming lava in the dark night sky. There is a river of lava on the side of the volcano.
By Mikaiah and Wakatere

Hot melted rock spewed out of the volcano and it was buring. The melted rock looked like fireworks.
By Evan and James

The volcano erupted voilently and the colour of the lava was red, orange and yellow. When the lava spew out of the volcano it looks like fireworks exploding in the dark night sky. The crater is the place where the lava spews out of and it falls all the way down the mountain.
By Taeshell and Anamei

Imagine if you were so close to a volcanic eruption your shoes would melt, in fact you might melt! Have you ever seen a volcano spewing out lava that looks like fireworks. Just to know that lava is orange, yellow and red.

Do you know Iron Brion?

We do! He came to our school!

Here are some of our thoughts about meeting Iron Brion...

Why did Iron Brion come to our school? So that we know what food that we should eat and that it needs to be healthy food that we eat.
By Timoteo and Francis

Iron Brion came to Pt England on Wednesday to tell us about the healthy food groups. There are four groups of healthy food that we can get iron from. The first on is meat and meat alternatives, the second fruit and vegetables, the third milk and diary products, the fourth is bread and cereals.
By Shalom and Sosaia

On Wednesday we went to see Iron Brion in the hall. Iron Brion told us about healthy foods that have iron in them, like beef and lamb. Iron Brion is a character. He played some games with us, like his favourite game dancing.
By Andee and Lukis

On Wednesday the 5th of may we went to go and see the brillant Iron Brion. Iron Brion told us how to eat healthy food. We has to eat five plus a day, and that's fruit and vegetables. After that we played a game of bogie woogie, it was a good game. We has a yum, yum burger to eat, it had lettuce, tomato and a patty.
By Mele and Josephine

Yesterday Iron Brion came to our school. He came to show us healthy food. He showed us vegetables, cereals, bread, milk, cheese, butter and meat. So our tummy can be healthy. Iron Brion was funny, I liked his jokes.
By Efilona

Iron Brion came to our school to teach us about healthy food. We learnt about fruit and vegetables, milk and diary products, cereals and meat. We have to eat these food because we have to be healthy and strong. I enjoyed it because they were delicious burgers.

What we needed was the ingredients and then we made made it outside in the bay. When we went outside, we had to start making butter. So we can put it on bread. It took us a long time to shake it. We had to count to 20. When it was ready to go on bread, we ate it.

Making Homemade Butter

What is yellow like cheese and it's the colour of the Sun? Butter! The Chipmunks (table group) made butter and went into the bay. We shook and shook it until it leaked. It looked like cheese and when we opened it, it looked like egg. Yum! Yum! Yum! Wow! It tasted nice. "Ew," said Raeleen, "It tastes yuck!' My stomach was rumbling and I felt hungry. Then we finally ate and it was yummy. We ate fresh bread with butter. It tasted like creamy ice-cream. It was delicious

Bubbles

We blew bubbles. We got in groups. The bubbles were shiny. Then I blew some big bubbles. The bubbles dripped on my arm and into my shirt. The bubble was sparkling. The bubbles were shaped like a sphere. We blew some bubbles outside Room 11's bay. The bubbles were fantastic. Sarona's one looked like a sausage and Lukis blew one and it looked like a sausage too. The bubbles were soapy. Iisa had some soap on his hair. My group put soap on the floor and did the moon walk. Some peoples bubbles went over the school. It was a lot of fun.
